Laser iridotomy is used in patients who have glaucoma with narrow or enclosed camera angles. In them, the intraocular fluid can not drain through the anterior chamber angle because of its iris closing.
Laser iridotomy aims to create a small hole in the periphery of the iris, making an alternative way of passing the intraocular fluid from the posterior to the anterior chamber of the eye. This causes the iris to be displaced backward, opening the ventricle and normal circulatory fluid flow.
The procedure is performed with a YAG laser and is therefore also called YAG-laser iridotomy.
